- Deliverable 1.9 Intermediate report internal meeting (1)
The first internal meeting of Work Package 2 was convened on13 and 14 December at the Leibniz Institute for European History inMainz. In accordance with the different tasks set out forthis work package, the goal was to offer a first evaluation of the work conducted in regard to the historical peace treaties. All members of WP2 were present: Henning P. Jürgens, Christophe Schellekens, Bram De Ridder, John Wolffe, Naum Trajanovski, and Lidija Georgieva. As required for deliverable 1.9, their progress will form the point of focus for this report. - Deliverable 1.10 Intermediate report internal meeting (2)
The internal meeting of Work Package 3 (WP3) convened on 25 and 26 April 2019 at the Erbacher Hof, Tagungshaus des Bistums Mainz (courtesy of the Leibniz Institute for European History) in Mainz. The main aim was set to evaluate the first research results on historical and present representations of religious coexistence. A second and according to the timetable even more current/urgent task was to discuss the standards for clippings, the systematization of clippings on the website and other issues concerning the work with clippings (e.g. copyright issues). A third task was to take a look at the future cooperation, to make plans for the collective volume and to encourage the discussion inside WP3.
WP2
- Deliverable 2.1: Report on the Corpus
The main aim of this report is to present the corpus of historical peace treaties that was studied within the framework of WP 2. As the adaptation of the historical peace treaties into clippings and the analysis of the context in which the treaties were drafted is the main task of WP 2, the corpus forms the basis of the team's work in the coming two years. Therefore, this report will argue why we have chosen to work on this particular corpus, and will demonstrate that for each treaty to be studied we have a sound basis to work upon. Our corpus of peace treaties consists of seven clusters that each share a common theme and points of attention. For all seven clusters, the treaties as well as the arguments for including them intothe clusterwill be presented. - Deliverables 2.2. Compilation of clippings
Between August 2018 and August 2019, the team of RETOPEA’s WP 2 (historical research) has been engaged in research aimed at the production of clippings based on a corpus of 21 peace treaties and settlements. This report presents the results of this task. A first section of the report will briefly present our source corpus. A second section will clarify how the format of the clipping has been conceived. A third section discusses the workflow within the team of the work package. - Deliverables 2.3. Henning P. Jürgens, Patrick Pasture, Bram De Ridder, Christophe Schellekens, Naum Trajanovski, Reports on historical peace treaties and agreements
The document consists of 21 reports commenting on a selection of very diverse kinds of texts: edicts, treaties, agreements, declarations and constitutions. They date from the 3rdcentury BCE to the 21stcentury and stem from regions in Asia, Arabia, Europe and North America; many of them are not limited to the region of their origin, but generated global outcomes. This selection of texts –discussed in D 2.1 –has been chosen as a sample of documents for the history of religious toleration and peaceful cohabitation of people adhering to different faiths and beliefs. They provide examples for how rulers, communities, legislators and diplomats dealt with problems that originated from religious conflict, how they developed preventive strategies, and how they tried to find positive ways of living together and enabling tolerance. The selection of the documents focused on that kind of texts, which influenced –on short or long terms –the following eras in a positive way: milestones on the way towards religious toleration and peaceful cohabitation. - Deliverables 2.4. Online publication (1)
The following deliverable was intended to cover the outcomes of the mid-term meeting in Granada and “to consist of conference papers, historical sources and other project material related to historical peace treaties and agreements (WP2)” as an online publication. Since the Granada meeting had to be canceled due to the Corona virus lockdown, the deliverable will instead present general descriptions and observations about the work of WP 2 regarding the clippings, which would have been presented to and discussed with the members of the advisory board in Granada. In its second part, it collects information about editions and publications regarding the historical treaties and documents covered in the WP.
WP3
- Deliverable 3.1. Clippings of WP3
While WP 2 focusses on historical peace treaties, WP 3 investigates contemporary representations of religious diversity in different (media) contexts. Researchers of WP 3 look at educational contexts, especially textbooks and museums and exhibitions, which are the main vehicles for conveying a normative description of the past according to the mainstreameducational premises. TV series and YouTube channels carry less formal understanding of religious coexistence past and present, which does preclude implicit or explicit normative messages and views. WP 3 also analyses political and religious influencers, to see how notions of ‘religious tolerance’, ‘peace’ and ‘cohabitation’ are discursively constructed in contemporary political debates but also in the views of the representatives of religious initiatives and organisations concerned with religious tolerance. In addition to its better depiction of today’s representation of religious diversity and coexistence, WP 3 produces a large number of clippings - Deliverable 3.2 Online publication (2)
The following report describes the publication of research results of WP-3. First of all, the results of the research is uploaded on the website as metadata accompanying the clippings (in itself also results of the research) (see deliverable D 3.1. “Compilation of text clippings”). Other ways are conference papers(panels), academic articles and books, most importantof them are highlighted in the following text. Unfortunately, a series of conferences where the research had to be presented were postponed or cancelled due to the covid-19 pandemic. Corresponding publications will be delayed as a result as well. - Deliverable 3.3 Preliminary report policy recommendations T 3.1
The following report gives the overview of the research focus and material, preliminary research findings and policy recommendations (where applicable) according to the subtasks. The report is designed in line with D 2.3, which presents the outcomes of WP 2.The actual research results will be published in academic (peer reviewed) formats. This document will be discussed at the mid-term meeting (31 March-2 April 2020) and constitutes the basis for D3.7 “Final report policy recommendations WP3”. - Deliverable 3.4 Preliminary report policy recommendations T 3.2
The following report gives the overview of the research focus and material, preliminary research findings and policy recommendations (where applicable) according to the subtasks, formulated by the researchers themselves. The report is designed in line withthe D 2.3. The actual research results will be published in academic (peer reviewed) formats. This document will be discussed at the mid-term meeting and constitutes the basis for D3.7 “Final report policy recommendations WP3” - Deliverable 3.5 Preliminary report policy recommendations T 3.3
The following report gives the overview of the research focus and material, research findings and policy recommendations (where applicable) according to the subtasks listed above, formulated by the researchers themselves. - Deliverable 3.6 Preliminary report policy recommendations T 3.4
The following report provides the overview of the research focus and material, as well as the preliminary research findings and policy recommendations according to the subtask 3.4 entitled “Promoting Religious Coexistence”. The report is based on the research of 3 members of the team who have worked with different methodologies including participant observation, interviews with leaders and practitioners of the organizations and analysis of the materials that they disseminate. - Deliverable 3.7 Final report policy recommendations WP3
The following report compiles and develops the policy recommendations based on the research of RETOPEA’s WP-3“Representations of religious coexistence: past and present”. The recommendations are based on the research and are gathered in their preliminary version in deliverables D 3.3., D 3.4., D 3.5. and D 3.6. Here the policy recommendations are presented according to the subtasks of WP-3and developed into the coherent narrative in order to prepare the work of WP-6“Policy impact: education and religious dialogue”. This document was to be discussed at the mid-term meeting in Granada(31 March-2April 2020) but was discussed in the skype conference on 3 April instead.
