1992 Agreements

The Spanish Muslims, who shave tried to obtain the recognition and support of the State for the practice of our belief since 1978, we hope that in 1992 these Agreements will become a reality. We want the Spanish State to recognize, guarantee and protect our right to adopt Islam as a belief and way of life.  Two key words: belief and way of life. That is Islam. Islam does not have a limited area for religion. Every vital transactions that a Muslim carries out emerges from his belief. Ritually codified acts that are performed in Islam cannot be identified as the only religious act.   Therefore, from the principles of religious freedom established in the Spanish Constitution, we as Muslims hope that these Agreements recognize the singularity of Islam, its  nature, the immense contribution it has made to the foundation and development of European civilization and the vitalizing cultural and spiritual effect it had and can have for current Spanish society.

This extract is part of the discourse of Sheikh Mansur Abdussalam Escudero, president on the Spanish Federation of Islamic Religious Entities (FEERI), at the Ministry of Justice in Madrid when the Cooperation Agreements between the Islamic Commission and the Spanish State was ratified. In the discourse titled “1492-1992: De las Capitulaciones a los Acuerdos” (1492-1992: From the Capitulations to the Agreements), Mansur Escudero explained how the 1992 Agreements between the Spanish State and the Spanish Islamic Commission were of huge importance for the right of belief in Spain as guaranteed in its Constitution. The 1992 Agreements recognized for the first time Islam as a deeply-rooted religion in the Spain, guaranteed the free access to religious sites and the right to religious freedom for Islam in the Spanish territory.
