Christian catacombs
In connection with the Christian persecutions, the early Christian catacombs are often used as illustrations in school textbooks. These catacombs were mostly used for burials. It is likely that many early Christian martyrs (victims of the persecutions) were buried there. Sometimes, the catacombs were used as places of worship. The most famous catacombs are in Rome, but there are also many in other Mediterranean countries. The textbooks most often use the pictures of Roman catacombs.
